10 Things You Should Delete from Your Resume

Alright folks, here’s the lowdown on what you need to get rid of on your resume! Before you shoot it off to your dream job, take a moment to scrub these 10 things off your resume. Trust me, doing this will bring your most marketable accomplishments to the forefront instead of being hidden in the fluff!

Old Jobs That Don’t Add Value

If it’s been ages or the job doesn’t align with your current goals, it’s time to say goodbye. Don’t let irrelevant experience devalue the real accomplishments that set you apart from the competition. Keep your resume focused and relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Irrelevant Skills

A resume that is full of skills and responsibilities that have nothing to do with the position you are applying for comes off as if you are applying to every open position that is accepting resumes. You come off as unfocused and unqualified for the role.

Clichés and Buzzwords

Don’t let your resume blend in with the rest. Avoid overused phrases like “detail-oriented” or “team player.” Honestly, the overuse of these buzzwords has made them irrelevant. Instead, give concrete examples of your skills and experiences, including quantitative data where applicable.

Objective Statements

Get rid of the objective statement. It is understood that if you are applying for a position, you are looking for employment. It takes up unnecessary space without adding any real value. Replace it with a career summary, which outlines your top accomplishments and the value you can bring to an organization.

Generic Descriptions

No one wants to read your summarized version of the job description in bullet point format. Instead of regurgitating tasks and responsibilities by using vague phrases like “highly motivated,” show potential employers what makes you unique through the outcomes of your performance and your accomplishments in your current and past roles.

Personal Information

There is no need to list your address, hometown, or any other personal identifying information that you wouldn't want a random stranger to have access to, especially if you are posting your resume online for public view. The last thing you want is someone to have access to your DOB and address just by browsing the internet. Scary!

Long Paragraphs

Keep it concise and easy to read. Use bullet points or short paragraphs to make your resume more scannable for employers. No one has the time or patience to read through lengthy paragraphs to find the information they need. Make it easy for them to see your accomplishments and skills at a glance.

Meaningless Hobbies

Unless your hobby adds value to the job you are applying for, leave it off your resume. This is not a dating site; employers want to know about your relevant skills and experiences, not that you enjoy long walks on the beach. It takes unnecessary space that could be used for marketable experiences related to the job!

Lies & Embellishments

Don’t even think about embellishing or flat out lying on your resume. It will come back to haunt you. Employers will do background checks, and they will verify your information. Not to mention, lying on a resume is unethical and can damage your professional reputation. Be honest and highlight your genuine accomplishments and qualifications.

References

There is no need to list references on your resume. This takes up valuable space that could be used to highlight your skills and experiences. I advise saving the reference list for when the employer actually requests it. Plus, you want to make sure you have informed your references beforehand and have given them a heads up that they may be contacted.

Bonus

Typos and Grammar Mistakes

Seriously. Proofread. Then do it again, or better yet, get a friend to help out. Typos and grammar mistakes are a major red flag for employers. It shows a lack of attention to detail and can make you appear careless or lazy. Take the time to ensure your resume is error-free before submitting it. It could be the difference between getting an interview or getting rejected.

Unprofessional Email Addresses

Get rid of "BrownSugar55@email.com and "CuteKittenLover88@email.com” It does not scream, “Hire me!” It comes off as very unprofessional and juvenile. Use something simple and direct, like your name. It's easy to remember, and it says you mean business.

By giving your resume a good declutter, you’re not only making it shine, but you’re also ensuring every word on that paper earns its keep. Keep them in mind and go confidently into your job search, knowing your resume is shining bright. The Job Description Is Vague

It's natural for job descriptions to evolve and change as the hiring process progresses, but be wary of vague job postings. If the company isn't clear on what they're looking for in a candidate, it could be a sign of disorganization or a lack of direction within the company. This could also indicate that the job responsibilities are not well-defined, putting you at risk of taking on tasks outside of your comfort zone or skillset.

The Hiring Process Is A Mess

If the hiring process starts off rocky , that could be a red flag. If they're dodging questions about growth opportunities, company culture, or specific job responsibilities, it's a heads-up they might not have clear answers. This could mean they're hiding something or that the company lacks transparency, which can lead to confusion and disappointment once you start working there.

High Turnover Rate

Did they mention they're always on the lookout for new talent? While it might seem flattering at first, constant hiring could indicate people are rushing for the exits. Ask yourself why. This could be a sign of poor management, a toxic work environment, or lack of advancement opportunities. It's worth digging deeper and asking specific questions about the company's turnover rate. After all, you want to invest your time and energy into a company that values their employees.

Poor Glassdoor Reviews and Overall Bad Reputation

In today's age of technology and social media, it's easy to do some quick research on a company before applying. Take the time to read reviews from current or past employees. If there are consistent negative patterns or complaints about the company culture, management, or work-life balance, it's worth taking note. A company with a bad reputation is not one you want to dedicate your time and effort to. Do your research and check out the company's reviews on Glassdoor. While it's important to take individual reviews with a grain of salt, repeated complaints or patterns in reviews can be a red flag.

No Clear Path for Advancement

It's important to have an idea of where this job could take you in the future. If there seems to be no room for growth or promotions within the company, it might not be the best long-term fit for you. If there's no clear answer on how you can progress within the company, you might find yourself stuck in a dead-end position. Ask about advancement opportunities and the career paths of current employees to get a better understanding of how this company values growth and development.

Unrealistic Expectations

During an interview, it's important to discuss salary and expectations surrounding the role. Be wary if the job expectations seem unrealistic or if they mention long hours and tight deadlines without any flexibility. Also, be sure to inquire about the responsibilities that would be assigned to the role. Does it sound like the role would require the commitment of two or three people to complete? This could indicate a toxic work culture that would lead to burnout. Make sure the expectations are realistic and align with your personal values and career goals.

No Work-Life Balance

I don't care about the free food and the annual Christmas parties if I can't make an appointment to get my annual physical. Make sure their perks aren't just distractions from a lack of substantial benefits . These might seem like small details, but they can make a huge difference in your overall job satisfaction and well-being.

Badmouthing The Company, Competitors, or Former Employees

Spilling the tea on others? Juicy gossip can be fun, but in a professional setting, it's a huge no-no. It shows a lack of professionalism and respect. If they're willing to badmouth others in an interview, it begs the question of how they talk about their own employees or clients behind closed doors. This could also indicate a toxic work environment and lack of support within the company. It's important to work for a company that values respect and professionalism in all aspects.

At the end of the day, trust your gut . If something doesn't feel right during the interview process, it's important to listen to that feeling. Maybe the interviewer gave off a bad vibe or the office environment seemed chaotic and unorganized. Don't ignore these red flags, as they could indicate larger issues within the company. Setting boundaries at work is like installing an invisible fence for your well-being—it keeps the good stuff in and the not-so-good stuff out. It's about maintaining that sweet spot where you feel productive, respected, and downright good about your job. Ready to be the architect of your own professional Zen garden? Here we go:

Know Your Limits

Understand your capacity and recognize when you’re reaching your limits. Ask yourself, "What’s my workload happy place?" Understand what you can handle without feeling like you're juggling flaming torches on a unicycle. Just like a car needs gas to run, you need breaks to recharge. Don’t wait until you’re running on fumes – schedule regular breaks and don't feel guilty about taking them. Your mind and body will thank you.

Speak Up

Don't be afraid to politely decline tasks that are beyond your capabilities or outside of your job description. There is no need to beat around the bush. If you’re swamped, say it with a smile. "Hey team, my plate's looking like a Thanksgiving dinner. Can we adjust?" It’s not being lazy; it’s recognizing your limitations and being honest about them. How Long Will It Take To Find A Job?

Since unemployment is currently on the rise (10.2%) and layoffs are a reality, this question has been asked several times. And though the internet is filled with guesstimates, estimates, and crystal ball theories, they are all just educated guesses driven by unstable variables.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has done most of the heavy lifting and reported back in May 2020 that the average duration of a job search was 7.7 weeks, so roughly two months. But that figure is meaningless to those that have been unemployed for 3-4 months to-date. This data is unfortunately based on a Pre-COVID-19 economy, and due to the record-high unemployment claims, it’s not a good indication of our new reality.

But polls and surveys have been conducted since then, and those that are admittedly searching aren’t too optimistic. The majority (64%) believe that their job search will take up to six months, and (38%) suggest it may take them up to a year to land something comparable to their previous career.

So how are some of these numbers being concocted? Well, many factors come into play that will determine if you land a job in a month or a year. Here are the top five variables.

The Economy, Job Market, & Demand

This is obvious, but had to be stated. These three work in unison, because regardless if you have a booming economy, there also has to be a demand for your skill set within a given industry. This is why knowing and leveraging your transferrable skills is so important. Even though your industry may have been hit hard during a recession, you should be able to pivot and land something comparable in other competing markets.

Demographics & Flexibility

Location, Location, Location – It's not just for real estate. Imagine attempting to pursue an acting career in Omaha, Nebraska. Depending on your current location, your flexibility will determine how fast you land your next job. Are you willing to move and go where the opportunities are available?

Credentials & Marketing Resources

Your education, skills, resume, and how you market yourself play a significant role in how long you search for a job. I have countless testimonies with clients who have invested in editing their resume or gained a particular certification to land employment shortly after that. How you market yourself matters and can be the determining factor whether you even get an interview. How are you marketing yourself? Quality of Job & Income

All jobs aren’t created equal. Positions with high turnover can be obtained pretty quickly. Most high turnover positions usually require little to no experience or education, and it’s reflected in the pay. They come a “ dime a dozen .” As your career moves higher in the ranks regarding quality and income, your job search can take longer. It would take someone that held a “Director” or “Executive” position with a six-figure income much longer to secure comparable employment versus a waitress or call center agent.

Referrals & Networking

It’s not who you know, but who knows YOU. Referrals can cut your length of search in HALF. Your network can make these other factors nonexistence. Some people have referrals locked and loaded and would only have to give the “ go ” and would have an offer on the table in less than a week. How strong is your network? Are past employers or colleagues singing your praises? Is your work ethic so phenomenal that employers are willing to create a position for you?

Top 5 Industries That Will Always Be In-Demand

Regardless of how hard the economy is hit, some industries will always be in demand. These industries will continue to grow while providing innovation and technological developments to the masses. Over the decades, some industries attempt to keep up with the rapidly changing demands while using archaic traditional methods only to become obsolete and made irrelevant by innovative technology.

Some industries are flat out necessary for our safety and survival. Industries that cater to our essential existence will always continue to grow and be in high demand.

For this reason, here are the top 5 industries that aren’t going anyway soon.

Agricultural and Food ��

You probably already knew agricultural and food-related industries will always be in demand because of the obvious. Food production is essential for our survival, making this a pretty stable industry regardless of how hard the economy gets hit. Of course, production and consumer prices will fluctuate depending on the market demands, but it’s safe to say agriculture and food are going nowhere fast.

Healthcare & Pharmaceutical ��

Regardless of how cruel this may sound, your health and the quality of service you receive is a business. The healthcare & pharmaceutical industry has made tremendous progress in improving the quality of care rendered and has placed a bet on the inevitable: you getting sick. Though morbid, it’s the circle of life. If you live long enough, you will age, and you will die. Depending on how well you take care of yourself will determine what that timeline looks like in the future. But no need to worry if your timeline falls short; the healthcare & pharmaceutical industry will have a pill to make it all better, at a cost, of course….

Education ��

It’s been reported that education falls under the top ten biggest industries in the United States. The education industry makes up approximately 6.2% of the United States’ GDP. That number is not just based on the country’s public school system. It includes, but is not limited to, private universities, vocational training, online education, e-learning resources, primary and secondary education, international studies, and educational materials. Education is the sister/brother of innovation. A stable educational foundation must exist before groundbreaking advancements can be produced, directly shaping our future economy. How education is delivered will always be a variable, but it’s fair to predict that the education industry is a pretty permanent fixture in our economy.

Technology ��

This should not come as any surprise that the technology industry made the top five list. Any and almost everything tech-related will make a mark on the economy now and in the future. From big data, developers, programmers, cybersecurity, robotics, engineers, yada yada yada. Bottom line, if you are in the tech industry, you have a job. Most people I know in the tech industry were not even affected by the recession. Many were already working remotely, and it was business as usual. Those that were downsized swiftly had offers on the table or lined up. The transition was effortless since many organizations looked to technology to streamline their business efforts in response to the new virtual marketplace. If you are still having trouble making out the writing on the wall, let me make it crystal clear. Technology has always been the driver of economic growth. Whoever can do it faster, more efficient, and accurate wins the market share ( ex. Amazon ). It is the future, and it plays a part in EVERY single viable industry, and it has a 1 ^st class ticket to going nowhere!

Renewable Energy & Environmental Industries ♻️

The renewable energy industry has been a hot topic, literally and figurative, over the last decade. Research and data have shown that human intervention will be essential to reduce global warming trends. The International Renewable Energy Agency indicated that global jobs in the renewable energy sector increased to more than 10 million for the first time in 2018. They expect there to be 28 million jobs in the industry by 2050. This industry moves up the charts and earns the spot of a crucial resource versus an optional novelty. We are learning that if we don’t make our planet a priority, we will fail to exist. So “Go Green” because it’s definitely not going nowhere else!

These are not brand new industries, but they are making money moves in a BIG way. Just keep your eye on these industries.

eCommerce & OnDemand Services - Are they a “ life or death ” industry like food or healthcare? No. But people pay for convenience, and I hear they spend a lot. eCommerce & OnDemand services are a billion-dollar business and rapidly dipping their toe in the trillion-dollar pool.

Gaming & Sin Industry - One thing a recession has proved is “Bad Habits Die Hard.” This industry consists of alcohol, tobacco, recreational cannabis, gambling, and late-night fun (use your imagination). And this industry saw a hard rise, no pun intended, and yea, it’s still rising…

Manufacturing & Textile - Listen, I know what you are thinking, “how the heck did manufacturing make it on the list?” When a recession hits, manufacturing is usually on the frontline taking the bulk of the beating, from plant shutdowns to massive layoffs. Though this may be true, the devil is in the details or, better yet, what’s being manufactured. So yes, car manufacturing plants will tank because people aren’t beating down the doors to buy a new automobile during a recession. 1. Identify The Market Demands

This tip is one of the top crucial pieces of advice I can give you. Before you go ham on LinkedIn and Indeed.com, know who is hiring and the positions they are attempting to fill. Do your research on the market demands. Ask yourself, “What has shifted in my current industry?” “What new markets emerged or were created in response to this pandemic?” The most obvious is that businesses have moved online, creating career paths for companies that offer “virtual” business solutions, examples, Zoom, DocuSign, etc. These companies have increased their hiring efforts to meet the market demand for the products and services they offer.

2. Develop A Strategic Career Plan

Once you have an idea for who’s hiring, put together your action plan. We offer a Career Planner that can assist you with this task. It would be best if you had a laser focus on the companies you want to target and the decision-makers that will be part of the hiring process. It’s ideal to have these two components identified before you even apply. It makes it easier to reach out to the decision-maker when you’ve done your homework and have an active application on file. You may still be punching in reports on an excel spreadsheet when there is industry-standard software that does this in a push of a button. When you are not in the know, it creates a disconnect. Are you familiar with the current technology or methodology in your industry? What got you your job five to ten years ago may be irrelevant now. There are countless online resources such as Udemy, Coursera, edX that offer industry-specific courses that will give you the cutting-edge skills to make you more marketable to employers.

7. Be Open-Minded to a Variety of Opportunities

Your next opportunity may not come in the form of a Fortune 100 company with unlimited PTO and a loaded travel expense account. It may come in the form of a startup that's looking for someone with your expertise to help them with a grassroots project. It may come in the form of a non-profit that needs assistance in spreading their mission and vision to others. It may even come in the form of an unpaid volunteer project that turned to full-time paid employment. Don’t turn away potential leads because the package doesn’t carry a household brand. You must have an open mind to a range of opportunities, or they will simply disappear.

8. Get Creative

This is the fun part! Creativity is what will set you apart from the pack. Think of some things that will get you noticed—maybe having a website or a comprehensive portfolio . Create a result-driven portfolio, showcasing outcomes of your work supported by quantitative data. Create a blog and position yourself as a leader in your industry by sharing your unique perspective on industry trending topics. Since many have jumped on the “no one reads cover letters” bandwagon, send that carefully crafted letter of interest that highlights all your accomplishments and proven value to a hiring authority. 9. Be Persistent & Consistent

As we all know, closed mouths don’t get fed. Old school marketing efforts follow the rule of 7. The Marketing Rule of 7 states that a prospect needs to “ hear ” the message at least seven times before taking action. With social media, apps, text messaging, and other instantaneous applications that makes the marketing rule pretty much obsolete. Not to say that repetition doesn’t play a factor in getting your message out, but being consistent has a more significant impact. Showing up and continuously showcasing your value will get you further than a one-off e-mail or LinkedIn request. You should be nurturing your network even when you are gainfully employed. It shows more character than reaching out only when you are looking for a job. Being persistent and consistent should be a way of life, not just when searching for a job.

10. Patience is Your Best Friend

This is probably one of the most challenging tips to follow. We all want it now! Understandably so, because your bills aren’t going to pay themselves. I get it, been there, done that, got a t-shirt and a souvenir cup. But what I almost learned there is a divine process that has to be acknowledged and respected. Success doesn’t happen overnight, nor does gaining access to it. If your sense of urgency outweighs your sense of landing a career that aligns with your long-term goals, you’ll end up with a fly-by-night opportunity. Practice patience and understand that everything happens right on time!

Career Change: Leveraging a Recession to Reinvent Your Career

When people think of recession, they visualize mass layoffs, downsizing, plummeting sales, bailouts, and bankruptcies.

That is nothing more than a long spelling for CHANGE .

A little known fact about recessions---they are the epicenter for innovation . They push the boundaries of survival and existence. Either you make the cut, change, and adapt or become irrelevant and obsolete. We have seen many examples of companies that have gone up in flames because they couldn’t keep up with the economic shift and the new way we do business.

Employment is no different. As companies make the necessary changes to remain significant and still provide a product or service that the market demands, they are also creating new opportunities to support this new market space.

A good example would be the K-12 and Higher Education industry . When everything shifted online, the demand for instructional designers, course creators, digital developers, LMS Administrators tripled overnight.

I know this may not be the most popular opinion, but there is a silver lining in every dark cloud. That being said, here are five benefits of making a career change during a recession.

It forces you to identify your passions

It puts you in a position to re-evaluate your professional desires and helps you discover how it all fits in the changing economy. If you were recently laid off, were you relieved? Did you feel a weight lifted off your shoulders? Was there a moment of indifference or just “another job” mentality? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, this recession was the momentum you needed to depart from a job that you already mentally checked out of a long time ago.

It makes you re-examine your skills

As the economy changes, new market demands surface. New market demands may require new processes, technology, and methodology. Are your skills up-to-date with the current market? If not, this is the perfect time to get that certification, take that class, or even learn a new skill to add to your resume. Your soft and hard skills will be one of the best differentiators between you and your competition. Check out Udemy, Coursera, and edX. They offer industry-specific courses that will give you the cutting-edge skills to make you more marketable to employers.

It reduces competition

You may be thinking, “If there are mass layoffs and high unemployment, how is my competition reduced?” As brutal as this may sound, you will see "Survival of the fittest" at play. This phrase originated from Darwinian evolutionary theory, which suggested that only the best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving. In other words, many will not enhance their skills set, for whatever reason, and simply retire out of the workforce. Many will pursue their passion and switch career paths entirely. Many will take demotions and re-enter the workforce in entry-level positions, and many will start their own businesses. The list goes on and on, and hopefully, you get my point. As the competition thins out, you should be taking the necessary steps to STAND OUT!

It forces you to think outside the box

A recession will drive you in a position to make an intentional decision to distinguish yourself from the flock. You will learn to become more creative with your actions. Only applying to random job openings will not be enough. You will learn to have a laser focus on your goals and may even have to re-brand yourself and skill sets to meet the new demand. What are some accomplishments that make you unique? What is your elevator pitch?
